The Head and Not the Tail: Living in the Fullness of God's Blessings By TD Brewer

The perspective of God's will for His people is woven with promises and instructions that, when followed, lead to a life filled with blessings. Deuteronomy 28:1-14 demonstrates this truth, painting a picture of abundance awaiting those who faithfully listen to the voice of the Lord.

In verse 1 of this passage, Moses reveals God's promise to the Israelites, emphasizing the undeniable connection between obedience and blessing. This principle applies to the ancient Israelites and holds true for believers today, reminding us that aligning with God's will opens the door to a life of abundance.

Verses 2 to 6 provide a detailed list of the blessings that come with obedience, such as being exalted above other nations, experiencing prosperity in work, and fruitfulness in life. Every aspect of life is under God's care, highlighting His concern for our well-being.

These blessings go beyond material provision to include authority and honor: "The Lord will make you the head, not the tail" (verse 13). Being the head signifies influence, dignity, and divine authority. This elevation shows how aligning with God's covenant can transform every area of life, reflecting His favor.

Furthermore, this blessed life also includes protection against enemies. God promises to defeat those who rise against His people (verse 7), offering reassurance that His presence and power safeguard righteousness.

The comprehensive blessings in Deuteronomy find their equivalent in the promise of provision found in Matthew 6:33: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." By prioritizing God and embracing righteousness through Christ, believers enter into a covenant relationship where divine blessings are freely given and experienced.

Deuteronomy 28:1-14 is a powerful reminder that obedience is the key to unlocking divine bounty. As believers, we are called to pattern our lives after Christ, walking in harmony with God's principles to experience the blessed life fully. This fulfillment is not merely worldly success but the manifestation of God's kingdom on earth through those who love and serve Him.

Furthermore, we can claim these blessings through Christ, as Galatians 3:29 states: "If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." As spiritual descendants of Abraham, we inherit God's promises, which transcend time and are available to us now.

Through obedience and living according to God's Word, let us hold onto the promises through faith and confidence that God intends for us to live blessed lives. We can thrive in His grace, experiencing His best in every area of life. Let us step forward boldly, knowing that a life lived under God's lordship enjoys the richness of His blessings in its fullest measure.
